TPS stands for Temporary Protected Status, It’s a program for Haitian immigrants or refugees who lost everything during the 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Its was a special program for countries who suffered and experienced natural disasters. President Obama granted the program TPS. This earthquake had effected the Haitian economy, it left a big toll on Haiti. Haiti suffer from their homes being destroyed, left with no food to eat and a cholera outbreak which led to lack of access to safe clean water. They left their country to get a better life and was given the opportunity to start a new life in america. But only for temporary visa pretty much. The TPS is until summer 2019, they have until 18 months to leave. Majority of Haitians are on TPS currently and build their lives in a new country, everything they build will be taken from them. There is a whole application process paper work and it takes years for them to be approved.
In a statement that was released by secretary Elaine Duke stated” On November 20, 2017, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke announced her decision to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Haiti with a delayed effective date of 18 months to allow for an orderly transition before the designation terminates on July 22, 2019.” This is very devastating, they have solely two years to get their paperwork. Other countries who are affected by the TPS termination is El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
As mention before “At the time, then-Secretary Kelly stated that his six-month extension should give Haitian TPS recipients living in the United States time to attain travel documents and make other necessary arrangements for their ultimate departure from the United States, and should also provide the Haitian government with the time it needs to prepare for the future repatriation of all current TPS recipients”. If you know anyone who needs immediate help. The process to reapply is 5 steps but prepare to gather all your paperwork and hope for the best.
On a positive note “Haitians with TPS will be required to reapply for Employment Authorization Documents in order to legally work in the United States until the end of the respective termination or extension periods.” Its important to try and reapply before July 22 ,2019.
